Three steps will prepare you for an emergency

May 4, 2010

It’s the 15th annual Emergency Preparedness Week. This Canada-wide initiative aims to increase awareness about individual and family preparedness, emphasizing how the public can reduce the risks and consequences of an emergency by being better prepared. Public Health Canada says there are three steps: Know the risks; make a plan; get a kit.

Provinces across Canada are holding events this week designed to raise awareness and help people prepare to survive those crucial first hours and possibly days in an emergency – whether that be a lengthy power outage, a flood, a wildfire or another kind of emergency.

The risks of various kinds of weather related emergencies (e.g., tornadoes, earthquakes) vary depending on where you live in Canada. The government’s Get Prepared website outlines the risks and how to deal with them.

It also allows you to prepare a family emergency plan online, which you can then print out. The site also includes all the components of an emergency kit and even how to buy one, if you’d prefer not to prepare one yourself.
