What we do

SMARTRISK is a national charity dedicated to preventing injuries and saving lives, by helping Canadians to see and manage the risks in their lives. Our main focus is youth, the age group at peak risk for injury.

Our five messages for smart risk are:

  • Buckle Up
  • Look First
  • Wear the Gear
  • Get Trained
  • Drive Sober

Our Vision

A Canada where youth enjoy life to the fullest, injury-free.

Our Mission

To empower youth through education, programming and policy change to recognize and manage their risks of injury in the smartest ways possible.

Our programs and activities

Youth programs

Our programs for youth include:

  • SMARTRISK No Regrets, a peer leadership program promoting smart risk in high schools across Canada. SMARTRISK trains youth leaders and their staff advisers to run injury prevention activities and events in their schools to promote the five messages.
  • SMARTRISK No Regrets Live, a travelling road show for high school students. The show combines a live talk by an injury survivor or someone deeply affected by injury, with a video containing clips of young people taking smart risks and more sober images of the results of poor choices that led to someone getting hurt.

Parents of youth

Research shows parents have more impact on their teenagers’ risk-taking behaviour than anyone else, including peers. SMARTRISK works with parents to help them talk to their teens about choosing smart risk. For more information, visit www.smartrisknoregrets.ca

Research and evaluation

SMARTRISK builds research and evaluation into our foundations to ensure our programming is evidence-based and having the intended effects. We produced the landmark Economic Burden of Injury studies.

Ontario Injury Prevention Resource Centre

SMARTRISK is contracted by the Ontario Agency for Health Protection and Promotion to host the Ontario Injury Prevention Resource Centre, to provide services to the province’s injury practitioners. We offer a number of services to practitioners, including consultations, education, communications and training.
